Critter Sitters
How pet owners can cut costs in the recession

Have you seen news articles about people giving up pets during the recession? Rising home foreclosures are forcing families to relocate. The number of people giving up their pets from home-loss has doubled. Many are abandoned.

It doesn’t have to be that way. You can cut costs whether it’s a recession or not. Here are some sure fire, street-smart tips for pet owners:

1). Cut costs at the Vet

• Ask for payment plans to spread out costs

• Invest in preventative health care
It solves immediate health issues, and stops them into building into bigger issues (and high expenses) in the long run

• Not every pet needs every shot
Make sure she’s getting only what she needs

• Look into health plans
Pennies may save thousands in the long run. Ask for multiple pet discounts

• Brush Bruiser’s teeth at home
Ask your vet how you can brush your pet’s teeth by yourself. Get a doggie toothbrush and start at puppyhood. Go online to Greg Robert Quality Pet Supplies (www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store.com), and get a brush for $1.62 (the lowest I’ve seen). Vets normally charge $35.00 and up, and considerably more if anesthesia is needed.

2). Hoard coupons

• Grab brand name coupons online
Manufacturers are dying to give them away. Check circulars, combine both, and you may get stuff for free, or you may even get paid for buying it

• Nab freebies
Visit Pet Smart, Petco and local events to pick up free food samples. Manufacturers gladly give them out to encourage customer loyalty.

Be careful: Do not mix and match! Stick with one brand. Ask your vet which food is right for your pet and stick with it.

3). Buy in bulk
Team up with pet owners and buy bulk from suppliers or wholesale warehouses

4). Contact the ASPCA or Humane Society
These organizations can help pet owners who qualify for assistance

5). Make your own toys and treats
Owners spend unheard amounts on accessories, toys and treats for their pets. Take pet beds. They retail for $39.00 on up to $90.00 per bed at pet stores. More times than not, they’re torn to shreds and you’re left with a bunch of teeny beads rolling around. Sew together pillowcases stuffed with your rags, socks, old towels or discarded clothes. It smells like you and comforts your pet. Of course the tried and true, stuff your socks with catnip, tie ‘em up and kitties are entertained for hours.

6). Bake it yourself
When you buy pet treats you pay for the box, the advertising, the marketing and mark-up. I know, since I worked for many of those companies for years. Go to www.bullwrinkle.com for hundreds of make- it- yourself recipes, which cost nothing. You can make your own Milk Bone dog biscuits with a few ingredients that most people already have on hand.
